The main character, Edna Pontellier, who is married to Leonce Pontellier, is struggling to rein out who she is. In the beginning of the story, Edna is subdue by monastic order except later on she learns to call back for herself. The Awakening itself stands for the process that Edna goes through to discover who she is. This process involves her disobeying her husband, time out society boundaries and having an affair. There are many themes presented in this story, but some stand out more then others. unrivalled of the more obvious themes presented was the theme of independence and self-identity. Edna has been struggling to find out who she is and necessitying to be independent so that she shadow make her take decisions, however during this time in news report women were seen as dependent figures. They had no identity of their own. At the time, a woman was just seen as someones daughter, wife or daughter, beyond that point they had no identity of on that point own. Another theme that stood out was how society, family and friends places limitations on a person and sometimes controls their actions. Society has placed limitations on Edna because it prevents her from being her own individual and from expressing any from of individuality. A good example of this would be when Edna decided to buy her own little place. When Edna decided to be active into a smaller home, her husband was worried about how society would view him.
