Georgia OKeeffe was born November 15, 1887. She was born in temperateness Pairie, Wisconsin she grew up there and also in Williamsburg Virginia. She was the second of 7 children. In 1908, she won the Leagues William Merritt Chase still-life prize for her oil painting Untitled. She took a summer course for art teachers at the University of Virginia taught by Alon Bement. Bement introduced her to artist and art educator Arthur Wesley Dow. From 1912-1914 she was working at the collage as Bements assistant.
Okeeffe was in New York once again from 1914 to June 1915, taking courses at Teachers College. By 1915, she was teaching art at Columbia Collage in South Carolina. While there she decided to put Dows theories to the test. She tried to start a personal language which she could excerpt her one feelings and ideas so she started a collection of abstract art.
