Dante Alighieri (1265-1321)
Ye ladies, walking past me piteous-eyed,
Who is the lady that lies prostrate here?
shadow this be even she my heart holds dear?
Nay, if it be so, speak, and zero point hide.
Her very aspect seems itself beside,
And all her features of such altered cheer
That to my thinking they do not appear
Hers who makes others seem beatified.
If thou for blend to cognise our lady thus,
Whom grief oercomes, we wonder in no wise,
For too the same thing befalleth us,
Yet if thou watch the thrust of her eyes,
Of her thou shalt be straightaway conscious.
O weep no more; thou art all wan with sighs.

Addressed to my Friends at Yale College, on my Leaving them to join the Army.
arrivederci! thou Yale! where youthful poets dwell,
No more I waylay by thy classic stream.
Inglorious ease and sportive songs good-by!
Thou startling clarion! break the sleepers dream!
And sing, ye bards! the war-inspiring theme.
hear ye the din of battle? clang of arms?
Saw ye the marque mid starry banners beam?
Quick throbs my breast at wars young alarms,
Unknown pulsations stirrd by glorys charms.
While dear Columbia calls, no danger awes,
Though certain death to threatend chains be joind.




Though fails this flesh devote to freedoms cause,
Can death suppress th unconquerable mind?
Or adamantine chains see-through substance bind?

When you shall see me in the toils of Time,
My lauded beauties carried aside from me,
My eyes no longer stars as in their prime,
My chassis forgot of Maiden Fair and Free;
When, in your being, heart concedes to mind,
And judgment, though you scarce its process know,
