Jose Antonio Vargas, author of The Face of Facebook, writes Facebook profiles are always something of a performance: you choose the details you inadequacy to share and you choose whom you share them with. This poignant description of Facebook excessively describes its brilliant yet ironically socially awkward creator, scratching Zuckerberg. The member begins by listing short, matter-of-fact statements from Marks Facebook profile. These stark and straightforward sentences describe Marks elect identity; that is, what Mark wants everybody to see but not inevitably the entire story. Vargas uses various rhetorical techniques to subtly reveal the billet surrounded by the somewhat mysterious private life and the excessively manized social life of Zuckerberg, the 26 year-old Internet tycoon.
The most salient example of a rhetorical device in this article is the way Vargas constantly alternates back and forth between showing Zuckerberg in a less positive public light and showing him in a more attractive private light. Shortly after the introduction, Vargas references an article from the October issue of self-assertion Fair and states, The magazine declared him our new Caesar.



However, the immediate separate following such a bold statement shows a more vulnerable and timid Zuckerberg. Vargas describes Zuckerberg as a wary and private person and how [Zuckerberg] doesnt like to speak to the press. These descriptions of Zuckerberg note with what was said of him in the Vanity Fair magazine article. Vargas manages to agnize between these two sides of Zuckerbergs identity early on in the article. Vargas continues to switch between the two identities throughout the article to allow the reader to establish their own opinion of Zuckerberg spot also encouraging reader to vanquish more twisting in reading the article.
