For this assignment, I have chose the story Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Heming way to discuss. The story takes place in a hold in situation and is a discussion between an American and a missy concerning a stopping consign they have made. The theme of this story is the decision to have an abortion and the impact on the characters themselves as individuals and as a couple. I love this storys occasion of symbolism to lend to the theme. The choice to reference white elephants as in talking about the white elephant in the room. When the girl references the hills being reminiscent of white elephants and he says not really, it points to the thought that she demands to discuss this while he impressions no discussion is necessary. some other symbolism I found interesting is in the comment of the cloud moving over the grain she is looking at while waiting on the train to arrive. I feel as if it is though she is second guessing her and the Americans decision to go through with this and that it really is unsettling to her. The setting of the train station I estimate to a fault contributes to the theme. I conceive of it shows intent of moving on, going through the motions and could also be a symbolism for the story.

For example, the American is saying what he feels he needs to say to ensure that she goes through with the abortion, and for him to move on. The commentary of the outlying area being shadowed over also shows the symbolism of the darkness in the impending decision. I think that these elements are critical to the pictureing of the story in the way it is told. You dont need to know these characters intimately to understand that there is a conflict in feelings between the American and the girl, which is evident in the third person objective point of view.
